Thursday 18th February 2009, Meteorite talk at Dromana
At the monthly meeting of "The Celestial Teapot" group in Dromana, I will be presenting my meteorite talk at their meeting place in Marina Cove by the Sea. The Celestial Teapot could best be described as the Mornington Peninsula Skeptics and is an informal group of people interested in hearing from speakers about a wide range of subjects with a scientific flavour. So if you live down that way, please feel free to come along and have a meal with them before my talk.
Saturday 13th March, Messier Star Party at Heathcote
The Astronomical Society of Victoria is running its usual annual star party at its dark site outside the town of Heathcote, north of Melbourne. If you would like to see a night sky so dark that the Milky Way can litteraly cast a shadow, please come along. I expect to be manning the gate and helping out in general. Please go to the ASV's website for further details about this event.
April 2010, Global Astronomy Month.
Building on the achievements of the International Year of Astronomy in 2009, astronomical groups will be organising a number of events to bring astronomy to the public. Many astronomical societies will be organising events during this month.
Saturday 26th June 2010, Partial Lunar eclipse.
Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses at totally safe to watch. This eclipse will peak around 9:30pm, it is a Saturday so most people don't have to go to work the next day. Unfortunately, the Moon does not turn the characteristic red colour, but this is the last lunar eclipse to occur at a civilised time. There are two in 2011, but they occur at 2:30 and 6:00am.
Tuesday 10th August, Ivanhoe Library, talk on astronomy.
As part of Science Week, the library has organised a talk on astronomy. I will be talking about the night sky, planets, stars and galaxies. If the skies are clear, we will have some telescope observing. Please contact the library for further details.
Friday 13th August 2010, conjunction of 5 planets and the Moon.
On this night, if you look to the west you will see the Moon, Venus, Mercury, Mars and Saturn in a tight grouping. If you then look to the west around 9pm, you will also see Jupiter rising. Armed with a pair of binoculars or telescope, you will also be able to see Uranus and Neptune higher in the western sky. This will be visible for several days after this time, but the Moon will grow larger making it more difficult to see.
Wednesday 1st September 2010, Meteorite talk at Bendigo
At the monthly meeting of the Bendigo District Astronomical Society (BDAS), 7:30pm at the Discovery Science Centre, near the station. I will be presenting a talk about meteorites as their guest speaker. The technical content of this talk will be slightly greater than what I normally present to schools due to the expected audience, but essentially it is much the same. So if you would like to see one of my talks for free and evaluate them for yourself, please come along. After the meeting, feel free to come and introduce yourself.
Dinosaur Walk exhibition
Melbourne Museum is opening a new exhibition on April 3 titled "Dinosaur Walk" which contains the skeletons of a number of dinosaurs. Check the museum's website for further details.

Science Week 2010
14-22 August 2010. Events with a science related theme will be run Australia wide.
Leonid meteor shower
17 November 2010. The upcoming shower for this year is not expected to be as big as 2009, however, meteor showers are highly unpredictable...so you never know. Unfortunately it will be a Full Moon on the 22nd so the skies will not be truly dark until very late in the evening.
