Scale model moons

As well as creating a number of scale planets, we also had to create a number of scale model moons.  The surface of the four largest moons of Jupiter were then covered in "gores" downloaded from the US Geological Survey site and then scaled and printed to size to fit the appropriate globe.  Any moons with a known colour (such as Titan or Iapetus) were painted as such, whilst all  moons belonging to a particular planet were painted the same colour to make them easy to identify during a talk.

Whilst making scale planets may take some time, scale moons can be completed in just a few weekends due to their smaller size.  The moons of Jupiter can also be covered in images taken by NASA with their probes, giving a much more impressive result.  These would make a great suggestion for a school project.  In the image below are the ten largest moons in our Solar System, Ganymede, Titan, Callisto, Io, Moon, Europa and Triton.
